		<abstract>The Brazilian coast presents an extension of approximately 7,500 km and a great fauna and flora biodiversity. Since 2008, a joint-cooperation between the Brazilian Institute for Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) is monitoring the occurrence of mangroves and shrimp farms in the entire country´s coast using Landsat-like satellite images. This is a challenging task because of the extension of the study area and the persistent cloud cover condition in the majority of the area. This paper presents the results of mangrove and shrimp farm mapping using 30-meter spatial resolution Landsat-8 satellite images from 2013. The Landsat image interpretation was supplemented by the 5-meter pixel size, orthorectified RapidEye scenes for refinement of the boundaries of the polygons related to mangroves. The images were visually interpreted with the support of the ArcGIS 9.3 software package, using color composites of bands 6, 5 and 4 (Landsat-8) and bands 5, 4 and 1 (RapidEye) in the red, green and blue channels. Image interpretation of mangroves was validated by the field works conducted in 2014 and 2015 in the states of Paraná, Bahia and Pará. We identified a total of 1,398,960 hectares of mangroves, mostly located in the states of Maranhão (505,490 ha; 36%), Pará (390,589 ha; 28%); and Amapá (226,894 ha; 16%). Shrimp farms were found mainly in the states of Ceará (10,156 ha; 33%) and Rio Grande do Norte (9,528 ha; 31%).</abstract>
